Description
The Oklahoma City Memorial Foundation conducted an international competition for the design of the outdoor symbolic portion of the Memorial. The preparation and competition covered the fall of 1995 until the winning design was announced in July 1997. The competition was conducted in two phases. In the first phase 624 contestants entered 30" x 40" x 1" designs which were reviewed by a select committee composed of family members, survivors, community leaders and professional designers and artists. They selected 5 finalists who were then provided with $15,000 stipends to create a 3-Dimensional model and 3-5 additional informational boards. Phase II comprised the review and selection of a final design from this group of five. This selection committee was also made up of family members, survivors, community leaders and professional designers and artists. The competition was conducted under the guidance of a consulting team of three persons, each having special areas of expertise to apply to the memorial process. These documents contain information preserved by the Memorial staff during the competition process and provide an overview of the entire competition.
